NYSABA Student/BT Hosts: Cultural Responsive In-Home ABA with Bobbi Rogers and Kozue Matsuda Direct-care staff (Behavior Technicians) are often the primary individuals implementing intervention within a family’s most personal environment: the home. Yet many BTs receive limited training in cultural responsivity, family systems, and how to meaningfully adapt their approach to align with each family’s values, priorities, and real-world capacity. This session addresses that gap. Participants will explore how culturally responsive practice extends beyond surface-level awareness and into practical, day-to-day clinical decisions: communication style, pacing, expectations, relationship-building, and respect for family context. Drawing from applied parent collaboration frameworks, this presentation emphasizes the importance of asking high-quality questions to understand what is truly important to families, how families define success, and what their realistic capacity for follow-through may be. Attendees will learn concrete strategies for helping BTs:
The session will include examples, practical language scripts, and supervisory strategies leaders can use to coach BTs toward more humane, effective, and sustainable in-home services. This training is designed for BTs, supervisors, BCBAs, clinical leaders, and organizations seeking to strengthen family-centered care and improve long-term collaboration outcomes. Open Q&A with committee members and invited guest speakers will follow the presentation.
